Desert landscapes

I haven’t posted in a while but thought I would share my collection of desert landscapes taken on my recent stint in the west coast of the U.S. of A.

Taken with my 7D and either an EF f/2.8 L 24-70mm or an EFS f/3.5 10-22mm. Also, 16:9 is the new 3:2.

I am excited.

Went to an old mates house last night for dinner, drinks, music and a good catch up. It was so cool to hang out again, as we haven’t really done it properly since starting uni.

We all used to play music together, and so decided to have a jam, which went really well. We started with a couple of soul / Motown numbers and went from there, it was so good to actually play with musicians again.

Anyway, the evening went on, conversations happened and we ended up completely inspiring each other to start this project.

So this project is basically an ‘open band’ type thing called ‘Desert Music’ with myself, Stefan and our friend Jack as the core members. Then we’ll find singers, drummers, percussionists, horns and everyone else through friends and online. It’ll be like a massive collaboration with no permanent members apart from Stefan, Jack and myself. We could have a track featuring a male American singer with French backing vocalists, or a track with a Russian trombone player and a Greek bouzouki player.

We will record songs that I write and each add our own segments. Then we’ll produce these songs and send them to people to add their own vocals on. It’s going to be interesting, and it’s something a bit different but I reckon it’s going to be fun, plus we’ll get to meet lots of new and interesting people.

We don’t expect nor want anything major to come out of it. It’s just going to be a great creative outlet as well as being a nice thing to have done.

At the moment we’ve got around 6 songs that we can lay down within the next couple of weeks. Stefan will design us a website and we’ll post them up there once we’ve recorded them. Then it will be down to the people to get in touchwith us.

I’m excited.

Oh and I climbed a mountain on this day. Just saying.

Desert Music Bad Boys in Malaysia: Part II

I feel I should give these more of an introduction. Last year Nick and I spent some years of our life (3 weeks) soul searching in Singapore and Malaysia. In our jungle fever / chinese food madness, Nick decided to buy a £1k video camera from Kuala Lumpur, from a young man named Brian at the Sony store. In retrospect, we could have got some discount as he was outrageously flirtatious towards us. He also had a spectacular running style, so much so that we began to purposely ask him to get something from the storage room so we could watch it.

Anyway, we’re not professional documentary makers, neither are we charismatic presenters, but here is Part II, ‘highlighting’ our travels to the Cameron Highlands.

What a crazy place, the moment I walked out of LAX I was in a scene from Lost. You know the one where Professor Artz almost gets run over and comically says “I’m walkin’ heeeere” like Dustin Hoffman. I know you remember. I have seen Hollywood, The view from Mulholland drive, the death place of Michael Jackson, Mike Einzigers jazzmaster, Greendale community college, Sunset Boulevard, the sets of Universal Studios, walked on Venice beach boardwalk, been filmed with Jay Leno, and flashed the cash in front of the Bel Air sign.

I’ve played some GTA: San Andreas, now I’m playing some Red Dead Redemption in Palm Springs and Joshua Tree. Saying that, I’m currently in a luscious oasis getting lemonade refills next to a pool surrounded in snow capped desert mountains. Awesome.

So, I recently found out ExploreIslandsNow.com have used a photo I took in the Perhentian Islands, Malaysia (read about Nick and I’s couples retreat). I got a nice photo credit and everything. Hit the jump to see it.

I’ve been working on this special project at They.Create for a few weeks now. It’s like nothing I’ve done before and the lack of live text and need for 100% of a users’ CPU makes me twitch a bit, but I’ve learned a lot and am looking forward to the next phase.

The environment includes a random day/night/weather cycle integrating pre-rendered motion graphics and dynamic animation within Flash. iPhone/iPad users get served an HTML5 version with some stripped back jQuery and CSS3 animation. There is also a super fallback for IE / no Flash, but who really cares about that.

Extensive research (google images) was required for the project, and a few boxes of Kleenex.
